The Role and about You:

R&D at Zwift is the early stage, discovery phase of the development process.  We are looking for an experienced R&D Design Manager, Mechanical/Product Design to drive all aspects of mechanical product design required to prove out innovative new product opportunities to add to our Connected Products roadmap. This role involves design management, managing external professional services, but most of all a focus on in-person delivery.  You are a creative, big-picture thinker who is experienced self leading, leading others, working both within diverse, cross-functional teams and autonomously to deliver against business critical missions. You are a passionate, intuitive, practical problem-solver who is hands-on, with a ‘can do’ attitude.

What you’ll do:

  • Quickly build POC rigs to demonstrate, explore and develop new technologies and concepts, focusing on mechanical design of systems that may include actuators, sensors and integration with the Zwift game and Zwift Companion app.  You will be working with electronics specialists, but experience in this area is an advantage.
  • Design manage and lead the technical and mechanical design of key R&D projects.
  • Develop, evaluate and own new concept propositions, liaising with Product Management and Strategy teams to resolve opportunity sizing and commercial elements.
  • Conduct and manage research and early stage development projects both in house, and through external professional services/accademia.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect high quality products that delight our customers.
  • Influence senior stakeholders to support the decision making process, informing creative & strategic direction.
  • Proactively identify business opportunities to improve customer experience, commercial results and efficiencies across the full product offering.
  • Oversee internal and external prototyping.
  • Trigger and facilitate appropriate design reviews as required.
  • Own 3D CAD, 2D specification drawings, bills of materials.
  • Act as mentor for more junior team members, focussing on developing big-picture, holistic thinking.

What you’ll have

  • Degree or HND/ HNC Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing consumer oriented products, with a thorough understanding of DFM and volume manufacturing techniques (injection moulding, sheet metal, CNC, extrusion, casting, forging).
  • Expertise in 3D CAD, Solidworks experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to work well with cross-functional team members and external suppliers, efficiently collaborate to achieve project goals, and contribute positively to the engineering community.
  • Experience in working closely on projects with electrical engineers.
  • A track record showing both detail and bigger picture thinking, with good commercial and cost awareness.
  • Experience of taking consumer feedback and creating innovation products to fulfill these needs.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and share your technical experience to develop the team.
  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to flex without sacrificing quality.
