Preamble (Mission)

hx is looking for a Head of Product. You'll be joining us at an exciting time – our Product Engineering function is scaling rapidly, and we are looking for a strong leader to build the world class Product capability that will sit at its heart.

This is a new role where you'll be given significant autonomy and responsibility to apply your experience and expertise to build and lead a high performing team. You’ll design and embed a best-in-class product management framework to help us deliver value to our customers and you’ll be a key contributor to the future direction of the product. The role will work directly with our CTO and CPO/co-founder and you'll be part of their leadership team.

The mission of the Head of Product is to:

  • Establish a Product capability, by attracting and leading a team of brilliant Product Managers and Designers
  • Be a key contributor to our strategic goals; working closely with the executive team to develop the product strategy and roadmap
  • Design and embed high quality product development processes and ways of working
  • Own the delivery of the roadmap by the cross-functional Product Engineering teams

Key Responsibilities

Establish and lead a high performing Product capability

  • Create our product management practice, define the ways of working and build the team to work with them
  • Create our product design practice, potentially including use of external partners in the short-medium term
  • Create our agile/delivery practice, potentially including use of external partners
  • Manage, mentor and coach team members

Drive the current roadmap and help build the future product strategy

  • Be data-driven and apply user research, both direct (internal and external customer/stakeholder interviews, surveys, etc) and indirect (specifying requirements and analysis of automated usage analytics)
  • Present and communicate research findings

Develop and embed best practice product management processes, techniques, and tooling within the team

  • Embed practices and patterns that allow your experience and expertise to be scaled across your capability
  • Introduce new tools and techniques to accelerate and amplify capability’s output
  • Work with your team to continuously iterate and improve your ways of working

Own the delivery of the roadmap

  • Work with your engineering peers to ensure the right people are in the right place at the right time to deliver safely
  • Establish clear reporting mechanisms and using them to ensure transparent and consistent delivery of value for our customers
  • Promote a culture of quality, accountability, reliability and urgency in your team

Initial Deliverables

Day one

  • Assume responsibility of the nascent Product capability, including management and mentorship of Product team members
  • Ensure our cross-functional delivery teams reliably and consistently deliver against plan

3-6 months

  • Develop the processes and tooling to allow us to deliver at scale across multiple value streams within your first three months, and have these fully embedded across the teams within six months
  • Work closely with our in-house talent team to scale our Product, Design and Delivery practices to full strength (with support from external partners in the short-medium term if appropriate)
  • Work with our Customer and Consulting team to design and implement processes for customer research
  • Work with our Sales team to incorporate sales/market intelligence into our decision making

6-12 months

  • Develop the next iteration of our roadmap, using an analytical and data-driven approach to product design

Competencies

If you're the right fit for this role, you will be able to show clear evidence of:

Leadership

You'll be responsible for building our product capability from a very small existing team to a much larger one as we scale. You'll need to demonstrate the ability to attract, retain, lead, and inspire the best

Autonomy

You'll be given significant freedom and flexibility to define our processes and ways of working. This means you'll need to show

  • Proactivity and initiative: you'll need to adapt and apply your experience and expertise in a new context. You’ll introduce new ways of thinking and best practices to hx, so must be excited about setting a direction and leading us along it
  • Communication, persuasion and teamwork: your decisions will impact many parts of hx, so you'll need to be able to clearly articulate your thinking to achieve buy-in

Thoughtfulness

As a B2B SaaS platform operating in a specialist domain, we do not have many customers relative to other tech companies. We also have a high ongoing support burden as the nature of our product means choices we make in product design can often be very difficult or impossible to change once they are in the hands of our customers.

This makes it critical that you can display:

  • Long term thinking and good judgement to understand the impact of any decisions
  • Analytical skills to drive decisions where we cannot easily experiment

Background/Experience

hx is far less interested in counting years over evidence of delivery, and our requirements reflect this.

You must have:

  • Experience leading a Product team, ideally at a fast-scaling B2B SaaS company
  • An impressive portfolio of products or services that you’ve taken from inception through delivery to iteration
  • A track record of building high performing teams by attracting and inspiring the best talent
  • Strong understanding and experience in implementing best-practice product processes
  • Demonstrable experience of strategic planning combined with effective delivery
  • Strong technical skills, allowing you to effectively lead the design of a technically complex product

We also value

  • Insurtech or other Fintech experience
  • Community contributions through meetup/conference talks, blogs or open-source work

What do we offer?

  • Competitive salary + very staff-friendly EMI share options
  • £5,000 annual learning & development allowance
  • 33 days annual leave (inc. public holidays)
  • £250 gadget-for-the-office budget (on hiatus due to Covid)
  • Top-spec equipment (laptop, wireless keyboards, screens, etc)
  • Huge opportunity for personal development and mastery as we grow together
  • Regular remote hackathons, lunch & learns, socials and games nights
  • Team breakfasts and lunches, snacks, drinks fridge, fun office @ The Ministry
  • Annual team trip somewhere warm (sadly on hold due to COVID19)

What’s next?

  • Initial call with our Talent team to kick things off
  • Introductory call with your future manager (with your choice of questions)
  • Practical interview with your future colleagues
  • Meet the team (with your choice of who) + Meet the CTO, CPO + CEO
  • We offer!

Diversity @ hx

We are committed to diversity and equal opportunity. We’re a talented and high-energy, but low-ego and kind team who believes that the more inclusive we are, the better our work and culture is. We are not yet where we want to be in terms of balance, but it is our mission to build a team that represents a variety of backgrounds and perspectives and we are working hard towards that goal.
