Preamble & Mission

We're disrupting the insurance industry with our platform Renew, which insurers use to build mathematical models to make complex pricing decisions. Modelling the answer to questions such as:

  • What are the chances that SpaceX's next launch will fail?; and
  • What are the chances of Kanye West cancelling his sell-out tour?

Renew is self-serve - allowing insurance professionals to login to our development platform and build their own models in a "pro-code" environment, using the open source language of Python.

There is a huge amount of appetite in the insurance industry to learn more about Python and how it can help throughout the value chain, and at hx we believe in being net contributors to the insurance industry.

This is why your mission will be to build an insurance industry first community of Python and product evangelists enabled by world class learning collateral - partnering with others in establishing hx as a vital contributor to the development of programming skills in the insurance industry. This is not about just training insurance professionals on our product - but on all things that Python can help with in insurance (although one of your first tasks will be to set a realistic scope and target addressable audience for that training..!).

We are looking for someone with an extraordinary level of ownership who is confident establishing this capability independently and in doing so defining how great customer & community learning & enablement should be done!

Key Responsibilities

Note: hx is still a relatively early-stage business, and our culture prizes initiative highly - as such this section is a good indicator of your role, but the list isn’t exhaustive. The right candidate will seize the opportunity we have to build out an insurance industry first community, and teach hx what good looks like!

Working with all parts of the business - including ProdEng (product & engineering), customer, sales & marketing - you will be responsible for:

  • Building and training a community of Python & Renew product enthusiasts in the insurance industry
  • Developing the learning pathways required to upskill community members - including members of the wider public as well as customers & partners - on both subject matters
  • Delivering training along those pathways - with the appropriate combination of self-serve material whilst also understanding where specialist hands-on training will be required
  • Structuring the training and certification in an engaging way, considering how we can encourage community members to share their achievements and knowledge to broaden the community
  • Running a broad range of events which promote these communities, with the support of our awesome Ops, Customer and Talent team - both remote and face to face
  • Working with our Talent team to build a lean but highly performant team to achieve these objectives, to maximise your reach through partnerships and leveraging other areas of the hx business (including marketing sales & customer)
  • Choosing and embedding the systems and processes to deliver this in a scalable and collaborative way - leveraging tech to ensure we can measure and monitor uptake and effectiveness, and then responding to that!

You will ultimately own the end to end implementation of our vision to build a world-class and industry-first community of passionate learners!

The right person will also be an advocate for what best practice learning looks like across the organisation as we scale. This is expected to include supporting other senior team members on given projects, for example supporting on the learning pathway when onboarding new joiners across the business with no prior industry experience.

Initial deliverables

  • Build an understanding of the subject matter - Python in Insurance, and our product Renew - and the potential audience which it relates to - such that you can present to the team where we should be targeting our efforts and how we can get there!
  • Develop scalable learning pathways for Renew - delivering this manually within 3 months of joining, and built out in full within 6 months!
  • Choose the right platform for this to be delivered and managed - including working in collaboration with the Customer & Product team to ensure it sits seamlessly within the (pre-)customer workflow
  • Hire the team you need to get there - this may initially be a small team augmented by contract support but the quality must be best in class!
  • Built relationships with potential partners in the broader 'Python in Insurance' space whom we can leverage in building out a community presence in
  • Develop the learning pathways for Python in insurance and;
  • Successfully run your first events and certified candidates on the Renew and Python in Insurance learning pathways!
  • Lead an initiative, in partnership with our Talent & Operations teams, to attract a team of 20 graduates joining the insurance industry and help to train them on python in insurance and our platform Renew

Persona

If you're the right fit for this role, you will be able to show clear evidence that you:

Are an enthusiast

This is one of the defining characteristics of all hxers, and permeates work and play for us. We actively seek out lifelong learners who enjoy "levelling-up" as part of their daily life; this means you will be:

  • Deeply interested in the start-up and high-growth sector and ecosystem: its quirks, unique characteristics and requirements
  • Passionate about the latest in learning & community building
  • Keen to build out learning pathways in a way which challenges the norm - including leveraging data to improve visibility and how we can respond to community engagement with our learning pathways

Want to be an independent owner of a high value initiative, creating a best/first-in-class community

You will be expected to drive this initiative without prompting. The right person will be motivated by results and quickly establish themselves as a trailblazer in our business; this means you will be:

  • Independent & unusually proactive
  • Someone who delivers on commitments - sets yourself ambitious goals and achieves them
  • Highly data-driven and results-oriented
  • Have intrinsically high standards - you will set the standard in your team
  • Unwaveringly enthusiastic - because being first to do this in an industry can be challenging!!

Are a team player - in the broadest sense. Able and wanting to work with partners inside and outside of our immediate circle to maximise reach.

There is a lot you, and your team, can do - but the speed and total impact of your team will be maximised through relationship building and partnerships with existing individuals, companies, and communities. To build these relationships and achieve this leverage you will need to be:

  • A good listener - someone who can take on feedback and respond to what the audience wants
  • Organised and a good planner - able to manage engagements with multiple stakeholders in parallel
  • Persistent and confident in your approach (but without ever being arrogant!)

You'll also need to be comfortable with our way of working, which is remote-hybrid, international, and service-oriented. We are an enterprise technology firm with a multinational client base - we let flexibility, customer-centricity and doing the right thing guide how and where we work.

Experience and skills

hx is far less interested in counting years over evidence of delivery, and our requirements reflect this.

To be successful in this role, you'll need to have:

  • Built out the learning pathways for a technical subject matter - delivering them in different formats including video tutorials and dynamic documentation
  • Implemented the system and processes required to support this learning pathway
  • Hired and managed a technical individual or team to deliver the content - in a measurable and data-driven way
  • Built a certification (or accreditation) process to measure the progress of participants throughout the curriculum
  • Experience building a community around these learning pathways
  • Organised events to either launch, or drive additional community engagement
  • Hands-on experience in product training, customer training, content development, or a similar related field within a tech company or community
  • *Bonus points if you have done this with a high-growth company, where the product has been changing and updated regularly, requiring a dynamic and agile approach to ensure the content remains current!

What do we offer?

  • Competitive salary + very staff-friendly EMI share options
  • £5,000 annual learning & development allowance
  • 33 days annual leave (inc. public holidays)
  • £250 gadget-for-the-office budget (on hiatus due to Covid)
  • Top-spec equipment (laptop, wireless keyboards, screens, etc)
  • Huge opportunity for personal development and mastery as we grow together
  • Regular remote hackathons, lunch & learns, socials and games nights
  • Team breakfasts and lunches, snacks, drinks fridge, fun office @ The Ministry
  • Annual team trip somewhere warm (sadly on hold due to COVID19)
