Mission

hx is looking for a VP of Marketing! The mission is to develop a world-class marketing function that plays to hx's strengths as an engineering-led, product-centric business through effective and engaging product marketing & community building.

This is a new role in which you'll be given full autonomy to define (y)our marketing strategy and build a high performing team to deliver against it. The role will report into our COO/CRO and form part of the Revenue Leadership Team - so you'll have direct influence over the future of hx!

There will also be a complimentary focus on revenue marketing, working closely with Sales and Customer to achieve our revenue goals.

Why is this important

You will be joining at an exciting time - in 2021 we partnered with Highland Europe in our Series A fundraise and embarked on a growth mission to take hx from a 12-person startup to a 100-person scale-up.

We're at almost 40 people and we're now establishing functions in areas we've so far been lean in. We're hiring for critical roles such as VP Sales, Head of People Ops & Performance, Head of Product and of course this VP of Marketing!

We reached profitability with just a 10-person team, and we're now signing enterprise customers that our competitors could only have dreamed of securing at such an early stage. In scaling we've added to our firepower but remain wholly tied to our values and protective of our culture - we think this is rare!

Establishing a Marketing function now is vital to our growth mission and this team will greatly impact the future of the company, which makes it a huge opportunity for the right person!

Key Responsibilities

Note: hx is still a relatively early-stage business and our culture prizes initiative highly - as such this section is a good indicator of your role, but the list isn’t exhaustive.

You will:

  • Develop a clear, focused marketing strategy across relevant channels that aligns with hx's long-term objectives in respect of:
    • Product - your team will strengthen our product's reputation as a customer-centric, self-serve platform that leverages open source technologies
    • Community & learning - help build & promote a community of Pythonistas and hx product evangelists
    • Revenue - working with the wider Revenue Leadership Team to achieve hx's revenue targets
    • Brand - you will ultimately be the product owner of the hx brand!
  • Build, support and develop a world-class Marketing function
  • Collaborate with the product and customer teams in sharing customer successes, feature developments, and other innovations we are working on
  • Be an integral part of the Revenue Leadership Team, expected to:
    • Map target personas and design an associated marketing plan to generate new sales leads
    • Establish an inbound/outbound lead generation strategy across relevant channels and execute against this
    • Collaborate with product, sales and customer team members to enhance the customer experience and support upsell strategies
  • Take a proactive approach to managing the marketing function, including:
    • Preparing and managing monthly, quarterly and annual budgets
    • Setting, monitoring and reporting on team goals
    • Participating in the planning of broader company objectives

Initial deliverables

  • Immediately take ownership of our fledgling Marketing team, including management of our awesome Content Manager
  • Design your 2022 marketing strategy. This will include the marketing plan, resourcing & financials
  • Work closely with our in-house talent team to build the marketing team required to achieve this strategy;
    • This role requires an exceptional flair for Product Marketing, so we would expect to support you in hiring a Revenue Marketing specialist to help balance that strength!
  • Identify quick wins to get things moving while we grow your team - initially your role will include some element of creating raw content yourself
  • Build out the processes you will need to effectively run the marketing team as it grows. As our first senior Marketing hire you will have the luxury of joining a successful, established scaleup but with a blank slate in your department!

Requirements

Persona

If you're the right fit for this role, you will be able to show clear evidence that you:

Are you an enthusiast

This is one of the defining characteristics of all hxers, and permeates work and play for us. We actively seek out lifelong learners who enjoy "levelling-up" as part of their daily life; this means you will be:

  • Deeply interested in the start-up and high-growth sector and ecosystem: and particularly those companies who have succeeded in the complex space of large Enterprise B2B SaaS
  • Passionate about the latest in Marketing, with an emphasis on Product Marketing but through the lens of how this helps drive Revenue Marketing targets over different time horizons
Want to work in a high-growth business and create the best Marketing function of its kind, anywhere

Working in a high-growth business is very different to life at a big corporate or lifestyle business. We'll want to see that you really understand this, and are excited by the challenge! For this role, this means that you:

  • Are a builder: not just of teams, but that also! You will need to combine your existing knowledge with research, deep thinking and experimentation - as well as cross company collaboration - to build a marketing function which is restless in it's pursuit of best practice!
  • Are hands-on and a doer: you will largely have a blank slate on arriving at hx, which means there is a lot to do! This will include rolling your sleeves up to get the job done!
  • Can bring it home: delivery is paramount at hx. The VP of Marketing role will set the quality bar for how hx is perceived across our different internal and external stakeholders - so it's critical that bar is set high!
Look for roles which have a positive impact

You recognise that communication and marketing are a key component in adopting change and want to be the voice that supports our creative, innovative team. At your core, marketing is about:

  • Recognising challenges: developing marketing messages which look to support and solve those challenges in a collaborative way
  • Building relationships: by being the voice of our incredible team and bringing together an ecosystem of partners, customers and hxers and celebrating their success
  • Inspiring change: Renew is a platform that facilitates change and a new approach, both for insurance and for everyone who works at hx itself

Experience and skills

hx is far less interested in counting years over evidence of delivery, and our requirements reflect this.

You will have:

  • Experience building and leading a Marketing team, ideally at a fast-scaling B2B SaaS company
  • Had direct experience of Product Marketing - working closely with a technical product and team to develop programmes and material which aids with training and development, awareness and ultimately increased adoption
  • Been directly responsible for lead generation and managing the marketing revenue funnel, with a proven track record of outperforming targets
  • Experience building outbound sales marketing strategies - likely leveraging ABM and/or other common B2B marketing techniques
  • Developed content campaigns to establish your company as a thought leader
  • Worked with a B2B SaaS product before, and can demonstrate an ability to simplify a technical product in to a customer centric and simple message or value proposition
  • Experience developing content across multiple channels, including video (if you have overseen the production of explainer, demo, or training videos this is highly valued)
  • The proven ability to design, implement and run processes and "playbooks" from end-to-end

Benefits

What do we offer?

  • Competitive salary + very staff-friendly EMI share options
  • £5,000 annual learning & development allowance
  • 33 days annual leave (inc. public holidays)
  • £250 gadget-for-the-office budget (on hiatus due to Covid)
  • Mental health & wellbeing support and coaching
  • Top-spec equipment (laptops, screens, wireless keyboards, etc)
  • Regular remote hackathons, lunch & learns, socials and games nights
  • Team breakfasts and lunches, snacks, drinks fridge
  • Annual team trip somewhere warm (sadly on hold due to Covid19)
  • Huge opportunity for personal development and mastery as we grow together
