We're looking for experienced, creative and curious full stack engineers to join Modulr’s new innovation lab, ModLabs. A rare opportunity to join a scaling FinTech and an innovation lab where the possibilities and potential are truly in your hands to nurture and grow!

Who is Modulr?

  • Ranked 42 in Deloitte’s 2021 UK Technology Fast 50 companies.
  • Raised $108m (£83m) in our Series C funding round led by General Atlantic top previous investments from Blenheim Chalcot and PayPal Ventures among others.
  • Named an official Best Workplace by Great Places to Work in 2020.
  • Ranked as the second fastest growing tech company in the UK by Dun & Bradstreet.

Modulr is a fintech scale-up that’s breaking new ground within the payments sector, developing cutting-edge API-first solutions that enable businesses to take control of their money. It’s our purpose to enable growth and innovation by making money move more efficiently.

What are our values?

We believe in The Modulr Way. Our Modulites work to:

  • Build the extraordinary: Ambition and commitment
  • Own the opportunity: Ownership and accountability
  • Move at pace: Performance and quality
  • Achieve it together: Honesty and respect

We look to build great things, collaboratively and collectively, and every Modulite is empowered to drive their own contribution.

Who are ModLabs?

ModLabs is Modulr’s innovation lab! We were launched to keep us growing and ahead of the curve, and to discover new opportunities for Modulr. We do this by being free to experiment with new ideas, co-designing with our community and tinker with the platform.

ModLabs isn’t a business-as-usual delivery function – we’re here to reimagine the future of Modulr, payments and money! We build proofs of concept to validate value.

We rapidly iterate to understand the tech, the industry, the problem and the use-cases to understand if there’s value in continuing with the idea in product delivery and adding it to a roadmap.

Our vision is to bring material change to the way payments work and benefit businesses and consumers and bring about an industry-first solution into the market.

What’s our stack?

In our wider delivery function, we’re a Java house with an Angular front end and work with PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Git, Docker and AWS, but in ModLabs we’ll use whatever tech we need to for our current experiment – for example, we’ve used node.js and solidity in previous experiments.

Who are we looking for?

An arbitrary number of years’ experience to prove seniority? No.

We’re looking more for aptitude and potential than a traditional CV – if you’ve got a couple of years’ experience but could build the next payments system with your eyes closed, we want to hear from you!

We’re looking for inspired, aspirational and talented full-stack engineers with experience in Java and Angular, or the aptitude and willingness to learn new skills. You’ve also got rich and demonstrable experience in microservices and working with and designing REST APIs.

We look after our own deployments so experience in DevOps tools and processes is a bonus – or being curious and willing to learn new things.

We’re looking for creative and curious thinkers; collaborative and cooperative team-players; empathetic problem-solvers; and enthusiasts who are interested in the tech and the industry and follow trends to consider their impacts and future potential.

Bonus points for experience or interest in decentralised finance (DeFi) – web3, blockchain, cryptocurrency, stablecoin, CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), NFT; or more widely, computational cryptography, zero knowledge proofs; or any experience in machine learning.

What will you do?

  • Work together with a talented bunch of cross-functional Labbers to discover game-changing ideas and build proofs to validate them.
  • Create full-stack solution designs for your experiments.
  • Contribute to and shape the backlog of ideas and each experiment you take on.
  • Develop full-stack experiments – as an example, this is a link to a wireframe prototype created in collaboration with our Product Designers that our Labbers then built out as a proof of concept to demo to our colleagues and partners – we were experimenting with how we could build out a Buy Now, Pay Later proposition leveraging Open Banking’s Payment Initiation and our platform.
    • This is only the beginning – you’ll be tackling larger, more complex and even more exciting experiments as we continue to grow and explore the world of payments!

What is the interview process?

  • Screening call

This will be with our talent team, usually lasts about 30 minutes and is a chance for us to learn more about you.

  • Hiring manager call

This is a call with our ModLabs Product Manager and another Modulite where we’ll get to know you a bit better and ask some general culture fit questions.

  • Exercise review and technical call

Together with ModLabs engineers, you will review a small piece of code and discuss what you see. After, you’ll have a technical interview, followed by a chance to talk more informally with the team where you can ask your prospective teammates lots of questions!

  • Final call

This call is with our Chief Innovation Officer. It’s a casual and informal call.

How do we support you?

Alongside your salary, Modulr offer a discretionary annual bonus, a newly introduced Modulr Share Options scheme, and a contributory pension scheme (up-to 4% matched contributions).

We’re currently hybrid working – a mix of office and working from home – looking to hire candidates for our Edinburgh Tech hub on George Street in the city’s centre but will consider UK remote applicants for those that blow us away!

Modulr offer 34 days’ annual leave (including bank holidays, which you can choose when to use), a training allowance for your next course or certificate, and an annual budget of personal development time to learn new things!

*Note: you do not need to be proficient in every single tech – this is for awareness.
