We are looking for an experienced, creative and curious Engineer Manager to join Modulr’s new innovation lab, ModLabs. A rare opportunity to join a scaling fintech and an innovation lab where the possibilities and potential are truly in your hands to nurture and grow!

Who are Modulr?

  • Raised $108m (£83m) in our Series C funding round led by General Atlantic top previous investments from Blenheim Chalcot and PayPal Ventures among others.
  • Ranked 42 in Deloitte’s 2021 UK Technology Fast 50 companies.
  • Ranked as the second fastest growing tech company in the UK by Dun & Bradstreet.

Modulr is a fintech scale-up that is breaking new ground within the payments sector, developing cutting-edge API-first solutions that enable businesses to take control of their money.

What are our values?

We believe in The Modulr Way. Our Modulites work to:

  • Build the extraordinary: Ambition and commitment
  • Own the opportunity: Ownership and accountability
  • Make giant strides: Performance and quality
  • Achieve it together: Honesty and respect

We look to build great things, collaboratively and collectively, and every Modulite is empowered to drive their own contribution.

Who are ModLabs?

ModLabs is Modulr’s innovation lab! We were launched to keep us growing and ahead of the curve and to discover new opportunities for Modulr. We do this by being free to experiment with new ideas, co-designing with our community and tinkering with the platform.

Our vision is to bring material change to the way payments work and benefit businesses and consumers and bring about an industry-first solution into the market.

What’s our stack?

In our wider delivery function, Modulr are a Java house with an Angular front end and our engineers work with PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Git, Docker and AWS, but in ModLabs our engineers use whatever tech we need to for our current experiment – for example, we’ve used node.js and solidity in previous experiments.

Understanding these isn’t essential though beneficial – we’re looking for great people leaders who are willing to learn and can lead a team to deliver amazing things!

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for engineering leaders, amazing motivators and coachers, who can lead a multi-disciplinary team.

You’ll have experience of mentoring teams of five or more and supporting the team to deliver amazing software while being responsible for identifying and monitoring key indicators of growth and performance.

You know how to engage your team to work in undefined landscapes, building the unknown to deliver game-changing innovations.

You can facilitate technical discussions within the team and can support them in taking alternate directions if they need guidance.

You are comfortable communicating at varying levels, from within team to the extended leadership, influencing for buy-in across the organisation.

What will you do?

  • Work together with a talented bunch of cross-functional Labbers to discover game-changing ideas and build proofs to validate them.
  • Provide great leadership for our engineers to help them create full-stack solution designs and develop full-stack experiments – as an example, below is a link to a wireframe prototype created in collaboration with our Product Designers that our Labbers then built out as a proof of concept to demo to our colleagues and partners – we were experimenting with how we could build out a Buy Now, Pay Later proposition leveraging Open Banking’s Payment Initiation and our platform (https://projects.invisionapp.com/share/H712BDK79TDK#/screens/463632999_Landing_Page)

    • This is only the beginning – you’ll be tackling larger, more complex and even more exciting experiments as we continue to grow and explore the world of payments!
  • Support, develop and coach a team of engineers of varying experience levels through effective 1:1 meetings and 360 feedback whilst working closely with technical leads.
  • Sponsor a learning environment for your squads and act as a mentor for up-and-coming leaders and contribute positively to the overall development culture at Modulr.
  • Lead on our recruitment needs, ensuring we’ve got the right mix of skills and experience and have a team of amazing engineers within ModLabs.
  • Lead the setting and monitoring of key ModLabs indicators and be the accountable driving force for technical delivery for the team.
  • Create an inclusive environment of ideas and contribution across the team – we’re an empowered team model with complementary skills.

What is the interview process?

  • Screening call

This will be with our talent team, usually lasts about 30 minutes and is a chance for us to learn more about you.

  • Panel and presentation

This call will be some members of the ModLabs and Modulr team so we can delve a little deeper into your experience and a chance for you to ask us questions to get to know us better, too! You’ll bring with you a short presentation which we’ll discuss.

  • Peer call

This stage will be a casual discussion with a peer – another Engineering Manager from our wonderful team. You’ll get a chance to find out more about what the day job is like from someone doing it and they’ll ask some more casual questions about how you.

  • CIO Call

This last stage is a call with our Chief Innovation Officer so you can ask any final questions you have about Modulr, ModLabs or the team.

How do we support you?

Alongside your salary, Modulr offer a discretionary annual bonus, a newly introduced Modulr Share Options scheme, and a contributory pension scheme (up-to 4% matched contributions).

We’re currently hybrid working – a mix of office and working from home – looking to hire candidates for our Edinburgh Tech hub on George Street in the city’s centre, but will consider UK remote applicants for those that blow us away!

Modulr offer 34 days’ annual leave (including bank holidays, which you can choose when to use), a training allowance for your next course or certificate, and an annual budget of personal development time to learn new things!

Stack

Java, Spring, Hibernate, Microservices, AWS, PostgreSQL, Terraform, Containers, Kubernetes, IntelliJ, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Angular, Typescript, Node, web3, Solidity, React

*Note: you do not need to be proficient in every single tech – this is for awareness
