As part of our continued growth, we seek to hire a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Electric Drives function within our Hardware team, Connected Products. This is a newly created position specialising in designing rotating mechanical / mechatronic components and associated manufacturing/test fixtures for volume applications. We are looking for an experienced multi-tasker, managing project prioritisation whilst fully supporting the team to deliver against stretching project goals. Alongside leading the team, there will still be plenty of opportunity to roll up your sleeves by prototyping new designs and maintaining/enhancing existing projects. You will have the chance to create an impact on the products we develop and help to solve some of our most ambitious engineering problems. The ideal person will have direct experience of designing components for electric motors and mechatronic systems.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams to create high quality products that delight our customers
  • Manage incoming work requests, prioritise team tasks and manage stakeholder expectations
  • Capture and interpret requirements, generating clear specifications, proposals and project plans
  • Conduct feasibility studies and develop high-level mechanical designs for electrical machines and inverters in collaboration with colleagues
  • Work with Engineering and Program Management colleagues to accurately plan and manage timing/deliverables
  • Detailed mechanical design of components for electrical machines (including rotors, stators, casings, shafts, bearing arrangements etc.), inverters (including cooling systems etc.) and manufacturing/test fixtures (e.g. jigs and rigs) for prototyping and high-volume production
  • Specify and integrate third-party mechanical components (bearings, fasteners, seals etc.), collaborating with other engineering functions to develop optimised mechatronic systems
  • Demonstrate that designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose, defining appropriate manufacturing routes where required and incorporating supplier DfX feedback
  • Support/lead design reviews and provide advice/feedback, see opportunities for improvement
  • Support/lead development and maintenance of DFMEAs, safety studies etc., identify CCFs etc. and support PFMEA/quality plan development by colleagues and suppliers
  • Support the ODM/CM/JDM partners to ensure products are designed for manufacture, covering DFM, tooling kick-off, tool bring-up, tool/part qualification, and support product assembly build activities.
  • Assist colleagues, customers and suppliers with troubleshooting mechanical/manufacturing issues, in the field or remotely, as required
  • Help provide root cause analysis and corrective action implementation as a result of build issues and reliability testing.
  • Support the build & test of prototype mechanical hardware/systems as required for projects
  • Contribute to the development of the businesses processes and procedures
  • Managing contractors where needed.

What you’ll have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent numerate discipline.
  • Master’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Experience developing mechanical components for rotating mechatronic systems (e.g. motors) for volume production applications.
  • Experience leading and growing a small to medium sized team.
  • Excellent communication skills with confidence to manage relationships in multiple global locations
  • Experience with SolidWorks 2D and 3D CAD
  • Experience of managing/collaborating with contract manufacturing partners

Bonus Points

  • Experience of designing electric motors for volume production
  • Experience of working in the fitness hardware industry
