Changing the way the world deals with death

We’re Farewill - we build simple, beautiful products to change the way the world deals with death.

We're looking for Full Stack Engineers to build robust, scalable and secure backend systems for our customer-facing products as well as our world-class internal sales tooling.

This is an opportunity to revolutionise an industry, help people through the hardest time in their life, and work alongside a passionate, diverse, creative team who all love what we do.

Sounds like the kind of thing you'd love to be doing? Read on!

The role

We have some pretty big plans and ambitions for 2022 (and beyond), and to deliver on these we’re going to be growing our passionate, diverse and ambitious team of engineers to help make our mission a reality.

As a Full Stack Engineer you will be working within one of our multidisciplinary product teams to build the customer-facing products for customers to learn about our offerings and buy them online. We also build the internal tools to help support our incredible sales and operations teams in delivering world-class customer service.

Our tech

This is an extensive list and we don’t expect you to have worked in all these technologies before, but these are the technologies you’ll be working on day to day. Our applications are written in ES6 JavaScript and TypeScript. For the backend we run on Node, serving Express and GraphQL APIs. We use PostgreSQL and MongoDB as our primary data stores, with Redis for our worker queues and session storage. Most of our new development is in PostgreSQL and we are gradually migrating away from MongoDB.

Our codebases use ESLint, Prettier, Percy, Cypress, Mocha and Jest to automate testing. We push to GitHub, test on CircleCI and deploy (continuously) to Heroku.

Hopefully you'll have the following:

    • For this role we’re looking for someone who’s comfortable leading on the technical design and implementation of projects - ideally where the Mid Engineer 1 or Mid Engineer 2 descriptions on our engineering progression framework feel like they resonate with your skills and experience.
    • You’ll be able to jump in and work with a mix of our front-and backend technologies - things like semantic and accessible HTML, modern CSS, ES6 JavaScript and TypeScript, React, NextJS, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
    • You’ve worked in a software engineering role in a web-based space, and feel comfortable leading on the delivery of individual features.
    • Your verbal and written communication skills mean you can communicate well with a range of people, including when we’re working remotely.
    • You’ve worked with non-functional requirements such as performance, usability, and security, and consider these in your work.
    • You have experience building accessible websites.
    • You’d be comfortable working within a startup environment.
    • You care about creating inclusive and diverse environments.
    • If this sounds like what you’d love to be doing, we can’t wait to hear from you. If you’re not sure that you exactly fit the above criteria, please get in touch anyway and we can always arrange an informal chat as a starting point.

What we offer in return:

    • We think this is a great role for someone who’s both keen to build their engineering skills and contribute to society in a really meaningful way. We can offer you an inclusive space to be yourself, have trust, autonomy, space to grow, and some really great people to work with. In addition, you’ll get:
    • Competitive salary between £50-85k and generous stock options
    • 28 days of annual leave plus the usual public holidays
    • Flexible working including when you start & end your day, how many hours per week you work, and how often you come into the office
    • Personal development budget of 3 days and £1000 per year
    • Regular ‘passion talks’, team socials & company-wide events
    • Santander Cycles membership
    • And much more!
    • At Farewill, our mission is to change the way the world deals with death - to make it simple, personal, fairly-priced & accessible to everyone.
    • To do that, we want to build a workplace that’s great for everyone, that celebrates diversity in all its forms, and where everyone who works for us feels like they can be themselves, bring their whole selves to work, and be treated fairly, equitably and respectfully.
    • We believe flexibility is important, so we’re happy to chat to you about flexible/remote working options or reduced working hours.
Our interview process

Our interview process usually takes around 1-2 weeks, but may depend a little bit on holidays and schedules. If you’re in a hurry, let us know!
Inclusion is really important to us and we want to make sure you are set up for success in interviewing with us. We want you to have the best chance of showing us the amazing work you can do and have done in the past. With that in mind, we can be flexible with this process and make adjustments for you if you need them, so please let us know.

Our standard process is:

Initial call with Talent
If we think your application is a good fit, we'll book you in for a 20-30 minute call with a member of our in-house Talent team. You'll find out about Farewill and our mission, the key features/ responsibilities of the position, and we'll discuss a little bit about you, your background/ experience and what you're looking for in your next role.

Call with an Engineering leader
You'll meet a leader in our Engineering team where you can discuss in more detail the role and the tech stack we use. You can also ask any questions you have about our Engineering team and the role.

A technical interview
We’ll talk through some of the technical projects you’ve worked on through your career. We want to learn from you, about what you have done, how you thought about the problem, what trade-offs you made and what you learnt or might do differently in future. There will also be time for you to ask the interviewers anything you want about the company, team or role. The interviewers for this round will be members of our Engineering team, typically this will be two Engineers or an Engineer and an Engineering Manager.

A team interview
Our Software Engineers deliver fantastic software as part of high-performing teams, so in this interview we’ll talk about your historical experience again, this time focussed on how you work in teams and all the non-technical skills that make a great developer. There will also be time for you to ask the interviewers anything you want about the company, team or role. In this interview the interviewers will typically include someone from the engineering team and someone from one of the other disciplines in our product teams. Most likely a Product Manager or a Designer.

Follow-up and offer!
If there’s anything we’re not sure of from the interviews above, we may schedule a follow on session to tell us more about your experiences in certain areas. We want to make sure you’ve got the best chance to tell us about something we might not have asked about in the initial interviews. This goes both ways. So if, after the interviews, you think of questions you’d like to ask us, we will set something up to answer your questions. The interviewers for any follow on interview will depend on what questions we want to follow up on or what you want to ask us. Hopefully after all that we’ll be in the position to make you an offer!

We share the topics we’ll ask you about in these interviews in advance, and let you know who you’ll be speaking to, so you have time to prepare. We know people can get nervous in interviews, so please feel free to bring notes and refer to them during the interview.
